Aashayein – Hopes, a Review

john If for nothing else but unabashedly ogling at him for two and a half hours, I seldom miss a John Abraham film. Granted, he happens to have starred in quite a few of my favorites, which I won’t disclose at this point, and does a rocking job with quirky roles. Also, some of his best work has been in those “arthouse” movies - I don’t like the word either but bear with me - where he’s surrounded by great actors, a good script and gets to play against type. His type, for anyone who skimmed over the first sentence of this piece, or those who have been living under a rock, is GORGEOUS. Aashayein is yet another of those films where Abraham shines. Maybe it’s the role, which taps into his typically concealed anger but which we can all feel lies dangerously close - read: perfectly HOT! - to the surface ...

Seductive Fashion at I-View Film 2010

India Fashion Undeniably, South Asian elegance sits at the very top of every fashionistas’ wish-list. Defined by their glamour and graceful class, designers from India and Pakistan have been influencing their Western counterparts for as long as man - and woman of course! - has worn clothing. Just think of the simple Kurta and how often that element has been, and continues to be used in American, French and Italian fashion lines… And Indian style always embodies the true definition of Couture: hand-made, exquisitely tailored and one-of-a-kind. It is exactly because of the transnational power of fashion that Engendered has decided to pair fabulous South Asian cinema with some of the most outstanding fashion icons from the region for I-View Film 2010. It is a combination that will prove absolutely once and for all why the world must look to the East for all its inspiration. These fashion events will include two spectacular fashion ...

‘Hiding Divya’: Bringing Darkness Into the Light

hdstillmadhurpoojs Hiding Divya is an important, momentous film. It’s an enthusiastic and well thought-out first feature by a talented filmmaker - Rehana Mirza - we’ll be sure to hear loads more about in the years to come. And the film deals honestly and openly with the subject of “Bad Blood” which most in the Desi community, as my own Italian people also prefer to do, would like to sweep under the rug. You see, this “Bad Blood” refers to that big unspoken secret - Bipolar Disorder - and carries with it the stigma always attached to mental illness within tight-knit communities. In my own culture, seeing a psychiatrist, or even a therapist to talk out some issues, is seen as a sign of weakness and the first stop on the road to being confined for life in a Sanatorium. Anti-depressants carry their own dishonor and the Italians would rather grin and bear ...

John the daredevil!

jhoota2 John Abraham set out to do what he had promised.    John Abraham was supposed to climb up a billboard and unveil the first look of Jhootha Hi Sahi. The billboard in question was at a height equivalent to a four storey building.   John was very thrilled at the chance of doing such an adventurous stunt. So he suggested that he should do the unveiling without any safety gear. However, the producers Saregama, Madhu Mantena and director Abbas Tyrewala refused to take such a big risk and were very firm on John doing the jump with all the safety precautions in place.   But because of the safety gear during the climb, John looked a little awkward. Once John climbed the billboard, he unveiled the first look of Jhootha Hi Sahi in the literal sense.   But the surprises didn’t end there; the first look of Jhootha Hi Sahi was such that no one could recognize John. ...
