New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has ruled India since May 2004, said Monday that there was no question of his retirement — because he had a task to complete.
‘I have been given a work and it is incomplete yet. And till I complete it, there is no question of my retirement,’ he told a press conference to mark the first year of his Congress-led government’s second tenure.
Asked what legacy he would leave behind as prime minister, the 77-year-old economist-turned-politician said: ‘I am not really bothered about the legacy issue. These are issues…
‘I have a task to accomplish. I am planning to do that to the best of my ability.’
Legacy is for historians to pronounce a judgment on, he added.
Manmohan Singh became prime minister for the first time May 22, 2004, succeeding Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Singh’s Congress-led United Progressive ...

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) A Japanese journalist Monday complained to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that it was very difficult for foreign journalists working in India to get press accreditation.
‘There is a big problem getting PIB (Press Information Bureau) accreditation and it took me 20 minutes to get into this venue. Even for covering parliament it takes six months to get the accreditation,’ the journalist from Yomiuri Shimbun lamented.
Singh responded: ‘I am very sorry to hear this. I will certainly ask the relevant minister to look into it.’

Manmohan Singh
New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said that his government would complete its five-year term but he did not want to do any ball-gazing for the next election.
‘I have every reason to believe that we will complete our term,’ Manmohan Singh told a press conference to mark the first anniversary of the second United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
‘Although we are a coalition government, we have given our country a government which works, which has delivered high rates of growth, which has accelerated the process to inclusive growth,’ he added.
Asked if there will be UPA-III, he said: ‘As to what happens after this term, we are, I think, too far away to say.’

Mangalore (Karnataka), May 24 (IANS) Teams of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and police Monday resumed their search for the digital flight data recorder, a part of the black box, of the Air India Express plane that crashed here Saturday, killing 158 people.
The teams had late Sunday recovered the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and a part of the black box containing the digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU).
In aviation parlance, black box is a loose term used for two pieces of equipment — the digital cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder — that give crucial inputs to investigators on causes of air accidents.
One device digitally records all conversations inside the cockpit and those with the air traffic controllers. The other has the history of the aircraft’s flight details, such as acceleration, engine thrust, airspeed, altitude, rudder position, which are also ...

Melbourne, May 24 (IANS) An Australian, who viciously assaulted an Indian taxi driver because he hated Indians, was Monday sentenced to a prison term by a court here.
The 23-year-old Indian victim was a student and part-time taxi driver. He suffered a fractured skull, nose and cheekbone in the attack early in the morning Feb 16 two years back, The Age reported Monday.
The assailant, Murat Kilinc, 22, told a psychologist that he and his family hated Indians due to their apparent lack of concern for others.
Witnesses first heard screams and cries and then spotted two people running away, prosecutor Jim Bessell told the County Court last week.
Rachael Freeland, a psychologist, had stated that Kilinc’s anger issues, alcohol abuse and hatred towards Indians may have ‘contributed’ to the incident. But she added that while subconsciously Kilinc’s offence may have been racially inspired, it was not consciously.

Cairo, May 24 (IANS) 57 ancient tombs, most of which hold an ornately painted wooden sarcophagus with a mummy inside, have been unearthed in Egypt, the country’s Supreme Council of Antiquities has said.
The oldest of the tombs, unearthed at Lahoun, in Fayoum, 100 km south of Cairo, date back to around 2750 B.C. during the period of Egypt’s first and second dynasties. Twelve tombs belong the 18th dynasty which ruled Egypt during the second millennium B.C., China Daily reported Monday citing a statement from the council.
The mummies are covered in linen decorated with religious texts from the ‘Book of the Dead’ and scenes featuring ancient Egyptian deities, Egypt’s archaeology chief, Zahi Hawass, was quoted as saying.
In 31 tombs dating to around 2030-1840 B.C., there were drawings of different ancient Egyptian deities, such as Horus, Hathor, Khnum and Amun.
